The Union Public Service Commission will hold the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2008 on 18th May, 2008 for recruitment to the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and Certain other Group 'A' and Group 'B' Central Services/ Posts. The examination will be held at various centres across the country.

For details regarding the Syllabus and Scheme of the examination, centres of examination, guidelines for filling up the application form etc. aspirants must consult the detailed Notice of Examination published in the Employment News/ Rozgar Samachar dated 29 Dec. 2007.
Candidates may note that there are changes in the Syllabi of General Studies Papers and all the Optional Papers of CS (main), Exam 2008, excepting the Literature Papers of languages.
  • Conditions of Eligibility:
    • Age Limits: Not less than 21 years and not more than 30 years on 1st August, 2008. The upper age limit is relaxable for Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes/ Other Backward Classes and certain other categories of candidates to the extent specified in the Notice.
    • Educational Qualifications: Degree of a recognized University or an equivalent qualification.
    • Physical Standards: Candidates must be physically fit according to the Regulations given in Appendix -III of Rules for the Civil Services Examination, 2008 published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 29th December, 2007.
    • Number of Attempts: The maximum number of attempts permissible to different categories of aspiratns, who are otherwise eligible, will be as follows:
      • General Category: Four
      • P.H. Candidates belonging to General Category: Seven
      • Other Backward Classes: seven
      • Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribe (ST): No limit
  • Application Form: The candidates must apply in the Common Application Form devised by the Commission for its examinations, which can be purchased from the designated Head Post Offices/ Post Offices (specified in Appendix -III of the Notice published in Employment News/ Rozgar Samachar) throughout the country against cash payment of Rs. 20/- (Rupees Twenty) only. Each such Form can be used only once and only for one examination. In case of any difficulty in obtaining the Application forms from the designated HPOs/ POs the canidates should immediately contact the concerned Post master or UPSC "Form Supply Monitoring Cell" over Telephone No. 011-23389366/ Fax No. 011-23387310.
  • Fee: Rs. 50/- (Fifty Only) through Central Recruitment Fee Stamp Only. SC/ST/PH candidates are exempted form payment of Fees (OBC candidates are required to pay full fess)

General Information/ Instructions:
The posts are purely temporary and co-terminus with the project. The maximum duration of the project/ appointment is up to 30.11.08. The selected candidate will have no claim for regular appointment under ICMR. Benefits of Provident Fund, Leave Travel Concession etc. are not admissible. No. TA/DA will be paid for attending interview, joining or termination of the services. Upper age limit is as on the date of interview. Age relaxation in case of SC/ST/OBC as per rules.
